Puzzles are an excellent means of engaging children and teaching them about difficult topics like cybersecurity in a simple and fun way. Below is how puzzles can be incorporated into a puzzle game that is designed for children to learn about cybersecurity, broken down by specific cybersecurity topics:
1. Password Strength & Security:
- Missing Piece Jigsaw Puzzle: Kids are given a weak password (e.g., "12345") and need to find "stronger" pieces (numbers, symbols, capitals, longer words) to complete a puzzle of a secure password. The more strong pieces they find, the more "secure" the puzzle.
- Word Search/Crossword for Password Elements: Word search where kids have to find words related to good passwords (e.g., "uppercase," "symbol," "length," "unique"). A crossword could contain clues regarding common password mistakes.
- Matching Game: Match common weak passwords with explanations of why they are weak, and good password examples with benefits.
2. Phishing & Scam Detection
- Spot the Difference (Email/Website): Show children two versions of an email or website – a legitimate and a phishing scam one. Children need to identify the subtle differences (spelling errors, suspicious links, generic salutations, panicky tone).
- "Which is Real?" Quiz: Show children a collection of emails or messages and ask them to mark as "real" or "scam" with an explanation (e.g., "This email wants my password, so it's a scam!").
- Drag and Drop Suspicious Items: Kids drag suspicious items like suspicious links, generic greeting, or pleas of urgency into a "phishing bin" to filter out unwanted emails.
3. Data Privacy & Sharing:
- "What to Share?" Sorting Game: Display different pieces of personal information (e.g., favorite colour, home address, pet's name, school name) and ask kids to sort them as "safe to share online" and "not safe to share online".
- Hidden Object Game (Personal Data): A situation where there is an online profile. Kids need to find all the pieces of personal data that might be accidentally exposed (e.g., an address on a package that is visible, a school emblem on a backpack).
- Maze with Privacy Gates: Kids navigate through a maze, and at certain points along the process, they encounter "gates" that are representations of privacy decisions. They have to respond to a data-sharing question correctly to proceed through the gate.
4. Malware & Viruses:
- "Clean the Computer" Puzzle: A replica of a computer screen that looks "infected" with cartoon viruses. Kids have to click on or drag antivirus software in order to "clean" the screen and make the viruses disappear.
- Pattern Recognition (Malware Behavior): Show children simple animations of what malware can do (e.g., slow computer, pop-up ads, files gone) and have them identify the "bad" patterns.
- Matching Game: Malware Types to Effects: Match simple icons for different types of malware (e.g., a "spy" for spyware, a "lock" for ransomware) with their potential effects on a computer.
5. Online Safety & Responsible Digital Citizenship
- "Good vs. Bad Online Behavior" Sorting: Present examples of online interactions and encourage children to sort them as "kind," "unkind," "safe," and "unsafe."
- Storytelling/Choose Your Own Adventure: Enigmas within a narrative wherein choices have consequences regarding online safety. For example, opening a dodgy link leads to a mini-game on dealing with malware.
- Code-Breaking/Deciphering (Basic Encryption): Simple substitution ciphers in which children have to decipher a message. This can give rise to the concept of encryption and its role in keeping information safe.
6. Cybersecurity Heroes/Roles (Optional, for older children):
- Role-Playing Puzzles: Give children roles (e.g., "Ethical Hacker," "Security Analyst") and puzzles for that role (e.g., the "Ethical Hacker" might have to solve a logic puzzle to "uncover a vulnerability").
- General Puzzle Mechanics & Game Integration
- Progression and Difficulty: Gradually increase puzzles' difficulty as kids learn more.
- Immediate Feedback: After solving (or attempting to solve) a puzzle, provide positive and immediate feedback and descriptions of the new cybersecurity concept learned.
